Working at Voice Technologies – Software Development Manager's Perspective
Last month, Nine Twenty Technology interviewed our Software Development Manager, Colin Wood about his job and working at Voice Technologies. Here are some of the questions and answers they shared. You can read the full interview on their blog, linked below.
Tell us a little about your background, and how you came to work for Voice Technologies?
I spent a number of years in Higher Education on a couple of different courses studying computing and audio technology at Glasgow Caledonian University, and was on the lookout for a challenging and exciting role afterwards. My introduction to Voice Technologies was purely by chance off the back of a conversation with a university friend who had recently started working there, and I was invited to meet the team. The company was embarking on a period of growth and I could see that that the opportunity to gain experience and grow in the company was significant. That was 10 years ago, and I have held several different roles in that time, but the work continues to be exciting and rewarding and no two days are the same.
What are the benefits of working for a growing business like Voice Technologies?
We are an employee-owned business, so we all share in our own success and are all fully committed to doing the best we can. We are 100% customer focussed and have great working relationships with our customers, so it’s a really rewarding environment to work in. Everyone in the business feeds into our direction forward, so there’s real opportunity to contribute and make a difference with your own thoughts and ideas.
Can you tell us about any projects you're working on at the moment?
At the moment we’re working on the next evolution of our core product and redeveloping it from the ground up in a web-based environment, whereas it was traditionally a desktop client. This has given us a real opportunity to completely revamp the user interface and improve the processes that were implemented some time ago. It’s a project that really excites us as it’s going to bring significant benefit to our customers. We’re also doing quite a bit of work with the latest in speech recognition technology in our solutions as the accuracy of the speech recognition engines these days brings significant benefit. Our e-forms application is also really growing in popularity and we continue to evolve that at a rapid pace dependent on our customer’s requirements.
